Introduction

The present documentation is intended for administrators that already have a basic knowledge of Digital Unix, hence forth called Duix.

The documentation does not refer to all possible administration tasks and is limited to basic specialized items. In any case, most tasks of system administration are described at least in brief form.

Some of the steps, like MAKEDEV, reported when describing how to add new devices such as disk and tape units usually are not required as newer system versions support dynamical configuration of devices, therefore in many situations limited or no admnistrator intervention is requested.

As file system management is one of the most important administrator tasks, the Duix native advanced file system AdvFs is treated in great detail in the present documentation with many real life examples.

To improve every day management, the present report is divided into two parts: a general description of the system structure and configuration and a large set of recipes required in every day management. Section related to daily operations are all flagged daily.

Specialized tasks and informations are reported in Appendix with a hopefully complete list of relevant files and utilities and a glossary of system administration terminology.
