System Event Logging

Primary system wide event-logging is performed by syslog that logs events in ASCII format on messages collected by the syslogd daemon for the kernel, command, utility, and application programs. syslogd logs messages to a local file or forwards messages to a remote system, as specified in /etc/syslog.conf. At system installation /etc/syslog.conf is created with the default event-logging configuration with file names for event messages in ASCII format.
