Physics goals of the TOF
Both in the baseline AMS-01 and in the final AMS-02 detector, the TOF
system has to provide:
The weight allocation and the power consuption of the TOF system are about
250 kg and 200 W, for AMS-01 and AMS-02.
the fast trigger to the experiment;
the measurement of the time of flight of the particles traversing the detector
with a resolution sufficient to distinguish upward from downward going
particles at a level of at least 10-11;
the identification of electrons and positrons from anti-protons and protons
up to about (1÷2) GeV;
the measurement of the absolute charge of the particle in addition to the
measurement done by the silicon tracker.
The Bologna Group Partecipation
The INFN Bologna and University of Bologna group realized the TOF system
of AMS-01 and will take the full responsibility of the TOF system for AMS-02.
