sent to lpr or to stdout. The format used is nice and compact: normally
two pages pages on each physical page, borders surrounding pages, headers

Availcols A small X program to interrogate your colourmap. Availcols tells
you how many colours are available in your default colourmap. It works
either by parsing the users colour into an XColor struture or giving some
default colour values. The values are then fed to XAllocColorCells.

A binary file editor and viewer. Just about any operation that you
could want to do to a binary file is possible with BEAV. You can insert
or delete in the middle of a file thereby changing it's size. You can edit
multiple files in multiple windows and cut and paste between them. You
can display and edit data in hex, octal, decimal, binary, ascii, or ebcdic
formats and send the display to a printer. BEAV display and keyboard handling
functions are based on those of Emacs.

updates to text files by highlighting changes made to the original file.
The original file is saved with the revision number appended to the file

The dvips program converts a TeX dvi file into PostScript. The fonts used
may be either in pk format or resident in the printer. If MakeTeXPK (part
of this package) is installed, then MetaFont will be used to generate any
missing fonts. Also incorporated in this package are LaTeX style files
and prebuilt "tfm" and "vf" font files for use with
the resident Adobe fonts.

customisable, extensible text editor. It can be run on a standard terminal
or under X. If run under X, it provides its own menus and convenient bindings
to mouse buttons. It incorporates various features, including facilities
for handling E-mail, support for program development, and running subshells.

Fortran 77 to C (or C++) converter. A sophisticated language translator
that can output the ANSI C or Kernighan & Ritchie C equivalent of a
Fortran 77 program. An extra SECNDS intrinsic has been added for this port
and a template Makefile for the translation process is also provided. Two
run-time shared libraries are built and the C translation is compiled and
linked with these libraries.

Command-line editing for interactive UNIX commands. This provides similar
functionality to HP-UX's "ied" command by allow users to recall
and edit previous commands whilst executing an interactive UNIX command.

A program to create large characters as you type. Figlet creates
large characters out of ordinary screen characters. The output is reminiscent
of the "signatures" many people put at the end of e-mail messages.
A good selection of fonts and styles are available. Figlet is actively
supported.

A fast lexical analyser generator - the GNU version of lex. This
is a tool for generating scanners, which are programs which recognise lexical
patterns in text. The final output of flex is a C program which is linked
with a shared library to produce an executable.

of binary files. Displays 256-byte blocks at a time and is useful for directly

screen. Traditionally, it has been added to the .logout file to serve as
a "message of the day". It handles two types of databases, offensive

Free Wide Area Information Server. The WAIS project is an experiment automating

Compress or decompress files using the Lempel-Ziv algorithm. It can handle
HP-UX compress and pack formats, as well as single-file ZIP and results
in significantly smaller files than compress. GNU are now using this format
for distributing source code. This release now defaults to a .gz extension
for files that have been compressed with gzip.

Motif-based Hypertext-like manual page browser. It allows the user to view
a man page in a Motif window and then click on highlighted keywords to
view other man pages. It also supports a keyword search and the ability
to view man pages not in the standard MANPATH.

Idraw is a drawing editor that lets you create and edit drawings made
up of graphics like text, lines, splines, rectangles, polygons, and ellipses.
Drawings are stored in files that can be printed on a PostScript printer.
You can can open an existing drawing when starting up idraw by typing a
file name on the command line.

Used to convert machine-independent Imakefiles to Makefiles. It is a vital
package required for compiling and installing X11R5 programs and should
be obtained at the same time as the Xaw/Xmu include files. This imake has
been modified for HP-UX 9.X and comes complete with makedepend and several
installation shell scripts. This release has minor fixes to compiler flags
and support for HP's unofficial Xaw/Xmu patch.

storage savings at the expense of some loss of picture quality. There are
2 programs - cjpeg to compress, and djpeg to decompress. This is the latest
production release and provides archive and shared libraries for use by
other packages (e.g. ImageMagick and mosaic).

Value added directory listing utility. Lc lists the elements of the given
directories. These are divided into the basic types (files, dirs, special
files, block special files and fifos) and printed in alphabetical order.
They are normally printed in columns preceded by a title indicating the
type. Lc comes with a host of options for selecting a configuring the output.

including a combination of both more and vi commands, calculation of the

Another Motif-based FTP program. It allows the retrieval and transmission
of selected files and directory trees. One particular special feature is

of other related information. Can select by process ID, username or filename.
It is a complete redesign of the fstat/ofiles utilities.

Curses WWW hypertext browser. Lynx is a general purpose distributed information
browser for World Wide Web. Lynx understands the full HTTP/1.0 protocol
and includes WAIS support if you have the freeWAIS package installed. Ascii
documents are displayed with links in bold and the user selects which one
to follow by highlighting the link with the arrow keys. Images are recognised
and replaced by the word [IMAGE].

PostScript pretty printer (written in C++) for text files. The program
can handle a variety of text files, including entire mail folders, news
articles and digests and can output in various formats suitable for certain
personal organisers as well as normal pagination.

Curses-based file transfer program superior to FTP. Allows a user to transfer
files to and from a remote network site and offers additional features
that are not found in the standard FTP command. These extras include maintaining
a list of recent sites that have been connected to and remembering the
last directory you entered for each of those sites.

Converts text files to PostScript format for printing. Basically a public
domain version of enscript, which allows you to send plain text in a nice
format (Courier font only) to a PostScript laser printer. It has many command
line options, including dual columns, landscape mode and gaudy (flashy)
mode. This release now also supports the ISO Latin1 character set.

Netpbm is based on the Pbmplus package (release: 10 Dec 91). A series of
tools for converting a variety of image formats to and from a set of portable
formats, and hence between each other. The four formats are: PBM for bitmaps
(1 bit per pixel) PGM for grayscale images PPM for full colour images PNM
for context-independent manipulations, and other formats. These formats
are upwards-compatible, and tools can read files in lower-resolution formats.
In addition there are some simple tools for manipulating the various formats.

Datastorm Technologies, Inc.

Practical Extraction and Report Language. It is a language that combines
some of the features of C, sed, awk and shell. It is an interpreted language
optimised for scanning arbitrary text files, extracting information from
those text files, and printing reports based on that information. It's
also a good language for many system management tasks. The language is
intended to be practical (easy to use, efficient, complete) rather than
beautiful (tiny, elegant, minimal).

Another interactive mail system using curses. Provides a fairly easy way
of reading, sending, replying and forwarding electronic mail. The Pico
editor is also supplied as part of this package, plus a bonus shell script
for converting Elm aliases to Pine aliases. Pine is a revamp of an earlier
version of Elm and was designed to be easier to use. It also has built-in
support for MIME extensions.

An implementation of the Post Office Protocol server. It runs on a variety
of Unix computers to manage electronic mail for Macintosh and MS-DOS computers.
The was developed at the University of California at Berkeley. Lots of

France.

Program to print n-up PostScript pages. Psnup takes an arbitrary PostScript
file (or standard input) and filters it to give n-up printing. It can produce
2, 4, 8 or 16 (very small!) pages on a single sheet. Perfect for printing
out long postscript documents that have been saved out from your WEB BROWSER!

An update of the Revision Control System. The RCS shipped with some systems
may be slightly out of date. This is the latest version - it is required
by the cvs-1.3 package. RCS manages multiple revisions of files. It can
store retrieve, log, identify, and merge revisions. This is useful for
files that are revised frequently, such as programs, documentation, graphics,
and papers.

A command line editing and history recall library. It provides a means
of editing and recalling commands from within an application program using
the arrow keys, EMACS commands or VI commands. It is supplied with full
documentation on how to call the library, and comes with a demonstration

Send commands to a SCSI tape drive. Setmark commands are available for
HP DDS tapes (improves positioning speed), these include commands like:

program is to support the use of HP DDS tapes for backing up (up to 2GB
of compressed data).

A package to allow commands to be run as the superuser. Sudo determines
who is an authorised user by consulting your /etc/sudoers database. The
program prompts for a user's password to initiate a validation period of
N minutes, here N is defined at installation time. N.B. There is no easy
way to prevent a user from gaining a root shell if he has access to commands
that are shell scripts or that allow shell escapes.

programming system. It is easy to use, and has very useful graphical interface
facilities. TCL is the basic programming language, while TK is a ToolKit
of widgets. TCL supports many of the features of conventional procedural

makeinfo, info, and texindex. Note that production of a manual requires

that makeinfo + info or Emacs be installed.

A tk program to read GNU Info files. TkInfo can be used stand-alone or

files provide a robust hyper-text capability that is ideal for on-line
help. Most GNU tools are documented in this way (via texinfo).

used on MS-DOS systems. This version supports encryption (source code from

Vi IMproved, a programmers text editor. Vim is a text editor that is upwards
compatible to vi. It can be used to edit any ASCII text. It is especially
useful for editing programs. There are a lot of enhancements above vi:
multi level undo, multi windows and buffers, command line editing, filename
completion and more.

Verify electronic mail addresses. This program takes an email address,
and interrogates the appropriate machine to determine if that address is
valid.

tree program for Unix systems. V-Tree is designed to show the layout of
a directory tree or filesystem. It has options to show the amount of storage
being taken up in each directory and count the number of inodes etc.

A superior (compared to man) manual pager. Handles HP-UX-style man pages
and comes with whatis, apropos and makewhatis commands too. One major advance
is that the woman command will list all the man pages that match the specified
command, unlike man, which only lists the first one.

This is an animation viewer that supports multiple formats. Some of the
supported types are:- FLI/FLC, IFF, GIF, DL, PageFlipper Plus and GoldDisk
MovieSetter animations. This will also allow you to create you own animations
by using a combination of GIF and text files.

Program to display the ascii character set. It shows the character alongside
its value, either in decimal, hexadecimal, or octal notation. A simple
and attractive programmers tool that you might want to have around!

Xaw (Athena Widgets for X11R5) and Xmu include files. This is the complete
set of include files that are not supplied with HP-UX 9.01. They are from
the MIT X11R5 distribution (mit/X11/Xaw and mit/X11/Xmu) and are required
when compiling X11R5 clients that use Athena Widgets.

X-Windows graphical monitor of NFS disk usage. Displays the space used
or free of NFS mounted disks using scalable barcharts. Detailed information
on individual disks can be requested and the space free information is
updated at intervals automatically. This version now handles automounted
disks too.

contents of RGB text files in an X window. This utility shows the actual
colour, the RGB values and the colour name of entries in the file /usr/lib/X11/rgb.txt
or similarly formatted RGB files. The display format of the RGB values
is user-selectable and includes TekHVC format as well as many scaled or
truncated RGB formats. This package was previously known as xpalette.

are shown side by side for easy comparison. They can also be viewed on
a terminal instead of an X Window.

representation od the directory structure of each given directory and its

Previews DVI files, such as those produced by TeX. Provides magnification
at different factors, a magnifying glass and keyboard shortcuts. This version
also correctly supports anti-aliased grey-scaling.

Show a shaded image of the Earth in the root window. The position (i.e.
Latitude and longitude) of the centre of the image can be specified and
the default behaviour is to update the image every 5 minutes to reflect
the change in the Sun's position. Other options include the ability to
specify the Sun's position (normally automatically calculated), the delay
between updates, being able to skew the image about the vertical axis,
the ability to fix the sun's position whilst the earth rotates, the brightness
of the shading and to optionally write the output to a PPM or GIF file.
This release now displays the location of 36 major cities around the world
and also supports monochrome displays.

This product is an extension of GNU Emacs. It was previously know as Lucid
Emacs, Xemacs, or Era. It is based on an early version of Emacs V.19 from
the Free Software Foundation, and stems from a collaboration of Lucid,
Inc. With SunPro and the University of Illinois. This version has mouse-sensitive
regions multiple fonts,the ability to mark sections of a buffer as read-only
the ability to detect which parts of a buffer has been modified, and many
other features. It has a more modern feel to it that some versions of Emacs.
In this version (19.13) the menu system has been extended.

A monitor which displays several system parameters. Xosview shows CPU usage,
load average, memory usage, swap space usage and so on. Each of these is

There is a toolbox window similar in functionality to the Macintosh's MacPaint
tools and there is a font browser for text selection. Extensive on-line
help is provided.

of functions to store and retrieve X pixmaps to and from files. A directory
of example XPM3 icons is now included with this package.

Motif/X windows tar file viewer. XTar allows you to view the contents of
a tar archive - optionally compressed with gzip or the standard compress
utility. It also allows you to extract and view individual files, unpack
the whole archive, or unpack selected directories.

The Xw widgets set as used in Doug Young's X Windows book. There were originally
provided by HP as unsupported, user-contributed code and some of the X
programs on this Archive require this Xw widgets set to be installed first.

monitor program, recommended instead of top due to its ability to display
process info in differently sorted ways. It can also total the process
memory usage on a per-user basis.

GL library for X windows. Xgl emulates GL routines under X11. Included
are most of the two-dimensional graphics routines, the queue device routines,
some query routines and some window attribute routines. Aspects such as
colour map handling are controlled from environment variables.

talk program and even communicates with the same talk daemon(s), but allows
for multiple connections and has an X11 interface.

Archiver and compressor popular on MS-DOS systems. Files may be packed
into a single (.zip) file using several different methods of compression.
Unpacking is performed by the unzip program and this release comes with
encryption support (source from outside the US).

A general purpose compression library based on gzip. This provides
function calls which allow an application to compress or decompress data
stored in a format similar to that used by the gzip utility. Its current
main application is by the PNG (Portable Network Graphics) library, which
in turn is used by the latest ImageMagick and mosaic releases.

Archiver compatible with microcomputer versions of zoo. Has the advantage
over arc in that it can handle pathnames as well, but otherwise performs
a similar task to arc.

Shell combining the best of ksh and csh into one. Supports aliases, filename
expansion, process substitution, command substitution, job control, history
editing mechanism, arithmetic evaluation using let and a full set of scripting
commands.
