Large Volume Detector
The detector, installed in the hall A of the Gran Sasso National Laboratories, consists of a large amount
of liquid scintillator (~1000 tons) in which neutrinos may interact, plus
layers of limited streamer tubes for the detection of penetrating muons.
It has a modular structure made of three "towers". LVD is mainly dedicated to the detection of neutrino
bursts from stellar collapses occurring in our galaxy or in the Magellanic
Clouds, but it is also useful for the study of other astrophysical phenomena
through the detection of penetrating muon events.
