Scientific activities
RD-FCC, R&D for Future circular Colliders, is a funding label under which INFN has grouped activities in preparation of future large accelerators.
P. Giacomelli has been one of the proponents of IDEA (Innovative Detector for Electron-positron Accelerator), a novel detector concept for a large circular electron-positron collider.
IDEA has been accepted by the FCC-ee project, aiming at building a 100 km circumference electron-positron collider at CERN. It is described in the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the FCC-ee project, published in January 2019.
IDEA has also been proposed and accepted by the CEPC project, aiming at building a similar 100 km circumference electron-positron collider in China. It is also described in the CEPC CDR published in November 2018.

Scientific activities
Search for the Higgs boson in the H→ZZ*→4l channel.
His group played a leading role in the discovery of a new boson with a mass of 125 GeV, compatible with being the Higgs boson
Started and coordinated for several years the CMS Future Analyses group with the task of studying the performances of the most important analyses with the Pixel, HCAL, Muon, Tracker, High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) subdetector upgrades for the HL-LHC phase.
These studies provided a fundamental input to all the Technical Design Reports (TDRs) prepared by CMS from 2013 to 2018
Development of a new type of Micro Pattern Gas Detector, the μRWell, as a possible technology for future upgrades of the Muon subdetector
