Backup

The centralized backup system for Windows / Unix systems is currently based on the following hardware:

Overland Storage Library connected in fiber to the server (w2kdfs2)

HP’s backup software, Data Protector (see A-09-05) is installed on the server, which allows you to configure a “Cell”.
The server controls and administers backups / restores by storing on a tape drive (library / autoloader) with the ability to configure an unlimited number of Windows and Unix clients.
This software provides for the installation of an agent on the client (for communication with the server) and the definition of backup methods on the server.
There are currently three backup profiles configured in the Cell for:

  • Windows machines CCL Service
  • Unix machines CCL Service

with a saving frequency that provides a full backup every Saturday at 20.00 every 5 weeks and an incremental backup from Monday to Friday (9.00 pm Windows machines CCL Service; 11.30 pm Unix machines CCL Service).
A specific space is reserved for each pool on the library cassettes which is cyclically overwritten (every 30-45 days); in this way you have a history that contains a full backup and the relative incrementals. Obviously, as the space to be saved increases, the backup storage time period decreases.

Daily censuses are carried out regarding the use of the resources of the backup system:

Cell Information (correctly visible only from Windows systems)

Client and related file systems configured (correctly visible only from Windows systems)

Client backup size (correctly visible only from Windows systems)

Statistics and use of cassettes (correctly visible only from Windows systems)

Last backups (correctly visible only from Windows systems)
