New resummed results for event shapes in DIS

This talk presents first results for the resummation of the
thrust, C-parameter and jet mass in DIS. The resummation includes a new
class of all-order effect, neglected so far in the literature. The results
are compared to H1 data, including power corrections and matching to
fixed order calculations, and show considerable improvement over
calculations without a resummation.

Testing the Universality of Fragmentation Functions

In the last year three different groups have obtained NLO
parametrizations of fragmentation functions (FF) from fits to e+e-
annihilation data at the Z mass. We review the status of the
calculations, show the results of our own fit, including a determination
of the strong coupling constant, and compare the three different
parametrizations. We apply our FFs to eP- and pp-scattering and to
e+e- scattering at higher and lower energies than M_z as a test of
the universality of the FFs.

Heavy quark production in the semihard QCD approach at HERA and beyond

We consider processes of inelastic heavy quark production at HERA and beyond
in the framework of so called semihard (k_T factorization) QCD approach with
emphasis on the BFKL type of gluon distributions. We investigate the dependences
of the differential cross sections on different forms of the unintegrated gluon
distributions. We show that the theoretical results are sensitive to
the BFKL type dynamics which may be investigated at THERA energies.
We also discuss possible effect of J/Psi meson spin
alignement, which is thought to be a vivid manifestation of
gluon off-shellness.


Hadronic final state predictions from CCFM Generators

We have obatined a good description of F2 and also the forward jet
measurements at HERA as well as measurements on charm. The bb_bar
x-section is in nice agreement with recent measurements, and also
J/psi production is much better described. Furthermore, with the same
unintegrated gluon density, we obtained from a CCFM fit to F2, we are
able to nicely describe also bb_bar production at the TEVATRON.

Some results are, however, very sensitive to effects of non-leading
terms in the gluon splitting function, and more studies are needed
before reliable predictions can be made with CCFM.  

Heavy-flavour production at HERA

I discuss the problem of a consistent matching between the
results relevant to the small and large transverse momenta of charm
and bottom quarks. I illustrate a formalism which includes the complete
fixed-order result, accurate to next-to-leading order, and the resummation
at the next-to-leading-log level of the large transverse momentum
logarithms. Phenomenological results, relevant to HERA, will also be given.

NNLO soft and virtual QCD corrections to Higgs boson production

Combining NLO Matrix Elements and Parton Showers

We apply a method to combine NLO matrix elements and parton showers,
which has recently been suggested, to the case of DIS
eP-scattering. The phase space is split
into 'soft' and 'hard' regions, where in the soft region parton shower
algorithms are applied. A NLO normalization in the soft region is
obtained by using a modified version of a hybrid between
phase-space-slicing and subtraction method to cut out negative weights.
We are constructing a software package by combining the DISENT
fixed order program, a modified version of the phase-space-slicing
method as implemented in JETVIP and the parton shower algorithms from
PYTHIA. We show first results obtained with this package for the
one-jet case and show how to systematically extend the results to the
dijet-case. We compare our results with DIS jet production data by
ZEUS.

 

Two-Loop Jet Physics: Status and Prospects

Jet production observables are among the most sensitive probes of QCD at
high energy colliders, where they are used for example to determine the
strong coupling constant. At present, the interpretation of jet production
data within perturbative QCD is restricted to next-to-leading (NLO)
calculations, with theoretical uncertainties being considerably larger
than current experimental errors. The extension of jet calculations to
NNLO requires various ingredients, such as two-loop corrections to
multi-leg amplitudes, multiple collinear limits of tree amplitudes, as
well as a consistent method for the numerical computation of jet
observables from NNLO parton level cross sections. We review recent
progress made on these subjects and discuss the remaining open issues
needed in particular for the two-loop calculation of three jet production
and event shape observables in electron-positron annihilation. 

  

Measurement of Pion Multiplicities and Hadron $P_{\bot}$ in DIS at HERMES

Data on hadron production in the deep-inelastic scattering of 27.5~GeV
positrons on hydrogen at HERMES are presented.  Charged and neutral pion
multiplicities are shown as a function of $z$, where $z$ is the fraction
of the energy transferred in the scattering process carried by the pion.
Results for neutral and charged pions are compared to test for consistency
with isospin invariance.  The multiplicity distributions have been
integrated over $z$ and the energy fractions carried by charged and
neutral pions have been determined.  For fixed $z$ the measured
multiplicities depend on both the negative squared four momentum transfer
$Q^2$ and the Bjorken variable $x$.  The observed dependence on $Q^2$
agrees qualitatively with the expected behaviour based on NLO-QCD
evolution, while the dependence on $x$ is consistent with that of previous
data after corrections have been made for the expected $Q^2$ dependence.

Results on the transverse momentum distribution of hadrons are also presented.

Differences between the mean values of $P_{\bot}$ for hadrons with positive and
negative electric charges and $K_s^0$ are observed at high $z$. The observed
differences may be due to a flavour dependence of the intrinsic transverse momentum
distributions of quarks in the initial nucleon.  


Hadron Formation in DIS in a Nuclear Environment

The influence of the nuclear medium on the production of charged hadrons
in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering has been studied by the HERMES
experiment. The differential multiplicity of charged hadrons from nucleus
relative to that from deuterium has been measured as a function of the
virtual photon energy $\nu$ and the fraction z of this energy transferred
to the hadron. There are observed substantial reductions of the
multiplicity ratio at low $\nu$ and in the previously unexplored high z
region thus suggesting a possible influence of the nuclear environment on
the fragmentation functions. The results are discussed in the framework of
the space-time structure of the hadronization process.  Quantitative
information on the formation time of hadrons have been derived by the
HERMES measurements  suggesting  a difference between the formations times
of protons and pions.                    

Sleuth : A model independent search method

We present Sleuth, a new quasi-model-independent search strategy
for new physics.  We define final states to be studied, and construct a rule
that identifies a set of relevant variables for any particular final state.
A novel algorithm searches for regions of excess in those variables and
quantifies the significance of any detected excess.  Results of a search of
over thirty exclusive channels in 100 pb^-1 of ppbar collisions collected at
the DZero experiment during 1992-1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron will be
presented. 


Prospects for Higgs at the Tevatron Run II

Upgraded CDF and Dzero experiments have recorded first
collisions from the Run 2 Tevatron. At first phase of Run 2,
total integrated luminosity of 2/fb per detector will provide
95% C.L. exclusion sensitivity for the Standard Model (SM) Higgs
boson up to the mass of 110-115 GeV. With 10/fb per experiment, this
exclusion will extend up to Higgs mass of 180 GeV and a 3 sigma
effect will be visible if the Higgs mass lies below 125 GeV. With
25/fb of integrated luminosity per detector, evidence for the SM Higgs
production at the 3 sigma level is possible for the Higgs mass up to
180 GeV. These results can also be re-interpreted in the Minimal
Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) framework: with 5-10/fb of
data per experiment, it will be possible to exclude at 95% C.L. nearly
the entire MSSM Higgs parameter space, whereas 20-30/fb  is required
to claim a 5 sigma Higgs discovery over significant portion of the
(MA, tanbeta) parameter space.


Beauty production at HERA

Recent results on open beauty production at HERA are presented.

The beauty photoproduction cross section has been measured via the 
semi-electronic (ZEUS) and the semi-muonic (H1,ZEUS) decay mode.
At both ZEUS and H1 the transverse lepton momentum with respect to 
a jet is used as observable. The H1 central silicon vertex detector 
allows to analyse in addition the lepton impact parameter spectrum, 
thus exploiting for the first time at HERA the life time information. 
The results are compared to NLO QCD predictions.

At H1 the combined lifetime and transverse momentum signature is
further used to observe for the first time the beauty production in
DIS. The cross section is measured and confronted with NLO QCD
calculations.

Three-Jet Production in DIS

Three-jet production has been studied in the Breit frame in
deep-inelastic scattering with the H1 detector at HERA. Various
distributions of a three-jet event sample are measured over a
large range of four-momentum transfers 5 < Q^2 < 5000 GeV^2 and
invariant three-jet masses 25 < M_3jet < 140 GeV. The measured
observables are directly sensitive to QCD effects of order(alpha_s^2)
and allow to test the QCD predictions in greater detail, compared to
inclusive jet and dijet production. A calculation in next-to-leading
order in alpha_s describes the size and the shapes of all measured
distributions.                  
   


Events with an isolated high energy lepton and missing transverse momentum and W production at HERA

A search is performed for events with an imbalance in transverse
momentum and with an isolated high energy lepton in e^-p
and e^+p scattering at HERA with the H1 detector.
The most significant Standard Model contribution to events of this
topology arises from W 
boson production with subsequent leptonic decay. The rate of measured
events is found to exceed the Standard Model
prediction at high transverse momentum of the hadronic recoil system. 


Searches for Leptoquarks, squarks in R_P violating SUSY, and excited fermions at HERA

Recent searches for leptoquarks, squarks in R_P violating SUSY, and
excited fermions from HERA experiments H1 and ZEUS are reviewed.
The resulting constraints, as well as future prospects, are compared
whenever appropiate with direct limits at LEP and the Tevatron and
indirect limits from low energy measurements. 


Isolated High Energy Lepton and Missing Transverse Momentum at HERA

A search for events containing both isolated electron or muon carrying
large transverse momentum and missing transverse momentum, has been done
using ZEUS detector at HERA. At large Pt^X (hadronic transverse momentum),
such events are expected mainly from on-shell W production and are of
particular interest due to the excess observed in the H1 experiment,
reported in last summer.  At that time ZEUS showed results from 1994 to
1999 data.  In this conference, ZEUS will show the updated results
including 2000 data, which increase the statistics of the sample from 82
pb-1 to 130 pb-1.  In the Pt^X > 25 GeV region, one muon event has been
found from the new data but, integrating over the total data sample, such
rate is consistent with that expected from Standard Model.  The result,
when interpreted in terms of single-top production with t->bW decay, yields
the most stringent constraint on the Flavor-Changing-Neutral-Current
anomalous magnetic coupling at the t-u-gamma vertex.  The coupling limit
presented improves by more than 20% compared to what shown in last summer
conference.  

Prompt photons in photoproduction at HERA

Recent results on inclusive prompt photon production in photoproduction
processes in the ZEUS detector are compared with new theoretical
calculations.  New measurements on prompt photons production accompanied
by a jet are used to evaluate the effective transverse momentum of the
quarks in the proton when it undergoes a hard interaction.

Determination of alpha_s using subjet multiplicities in NC-DIS

Measurements of the mean subjet multiplicity for jets in neutral
current DIS have been made in the laboratory frame for Q^2> 125 GeV^2.
The mean subjet multiplicity has been studied as a function of the
resolution parameter, the jet transverse energy and the jet
pseudorapidity. Next-to-leading order QCD calculations have been compared
to the measurements and used to make a new determination of the strong
coupling constant.

Inelastic J/psi and psi' production at HERA

Recent photoproduction measurements of inelastic J/psi
differential cross-sections are presented and compared to the available
theoretical models.
Psi(2S) photoproduction is also clearly identified and a measurement of
the Psi(2S) to J/psi inelastic cross section ratio is given and compared
to the LO QCD prediction.

b-quark mass measurements at high energy

Theoretical calculations at Next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD
perturbation theory allow for improved experimental tests of QCD. Flavour
independence of $\alpha_s$ has been verified with high precision by the
DELPHI, SLD, ALEPH and OPAL collaborations, taking as an input the
$b$-quark mass extracted from independent measurements done at low scales.
Assuming $\alpha_s$ universality, three compatible measurements of the
running $b$-quark mass, $m_b(M_Z)$, defined in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme
at the $M_Z$ scale, have been performed with DELPHI, SLD and ALEPH data.

QCD studies at LEP2

The upgrade of the LEP centre-of-mass energy up to more than
200 GeV in 1999-2000 offered the opportunity to test the
Standard Model in this new energy regime.
A summary of some recent QCD measurements concerning the general
properties of multihadronic events produced in e+e- annihilations
will be given. Studies of event-shapes, determinations of alpha_s,
measurements of jet-rates, charged particle momentum spectra and
charged hadron multiplicity will be presented and discussed. 

Di-jet production in photon photon collisions at LEP

Recent results on high pT di-jet production at LEP are reported. The
measured cross sections are compared to NLO QCD calculations and in
general show good agreement.
