The celebrations of 1937 for the bicentennial of Galvani birth were attended by hundreds of scientists, including eight Nobel Prize winners. Both the 1937 and the 1998 celebrations are supported by the major Italian Scientific Institutions.
Galvani was born in Bologna in 1737 and died in Bologna in 1798. He spent most of his life in Bologna. He was a Professor of anatomy and later of obstetrics at the University of Bologna. In 1791 Galvani published in latin his fundamental work on "De viribus electricitatis in motu muscolari. Commentarius" ("Electricity forces in muscular motions"). Galvani was a member of both the University of Bologna and of the Bologna Academy of Sciences.
