But, while the are distinct particles with positive or negative electric charge, it&#8217;s impossible to\u00a0 isolate a define magnetic pole.\u00a0 Infact, if we take a magnet and break it, we&#8217;ll always have two magnets, each one with is own south pole and north pole. The existence of magnetic monopoles was hypothesized by Paul Dirac in 1931 to explain electric charge quantization. Their search\u00a0 has continued over the decades with e<span style=\"font-family: Open Sans;\">xperiments at accelerators and in the cosmic radiation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: Open Sans;\"><span lang=\"en\">Pioneer and leader in the search for magnetic monopoles was Giorgio Giacomelli to whom the MoEDAL collaboration dedicated his first <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/JHEP08(2016)067\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Open page in new tab article.\">article. <\/a><\/span><span lang=\"en\">Under the guidance of Giacomelli, the Bologna Section played a fundamental role in the main experiments in the sector. <\/span><span lang=\"en\">Among all, it is worth mentioning the MACRO experiment<\/span> (Monopole, Astrophysics and\u00a0 Cosmic Ray Observatory) leaded at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso from 1988 to 2000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"float: none; background-color: #ffffff; color: #343a40; font-family: 'Open Sans',sans-serif; font-size: 16.13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none;\">MoEDAL is installed near the LHCb experiment, at Point 8 on the LHC ring. <\/span><span lang=\"en\" style=\"font-family: Open Sans; font-size: 16px;\">It uses two detection systems, both passive<\/span><span style=\"float: none; background-color: #ffffff; color: #343a40; font-family: 'Open Sans',sans-serif; font-size: 16.13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Open Sans; font-size: 16px;\">: sheets of CR39 and Makrofol as nuclear track detectors <\/span><\/span>(<a href=\"https:\/\/moedal.web.cern.ch\/moedal-nuclear-track-detector-system\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Open page in new tab NTD\"><span style=\"font-family: Open Sans; font-size: 16px;\">NTD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Open Sans; font-size: 16px;\">)\u00a0and Alluminun bars as Monopole Trapping Detector (<a href=\"https:\/\/moedal.web.cern.ch\/magnetic-monopole-trapper-capturing-new-particles\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Open page in new tab MTD\">MTD<\/a>). MoEDAL\u2019s radiation environment is monitored by\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Open Sans; font-size: 16px;\">the <a href=\"https:\/\/moedal.web.cern.ch\/timepix-radiation-monitoring-system\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Open page in new tab TimePix Radiation Monitoring System\">TimePix Radiation Monitoring System<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Layout of the MoEDAL experiment\" src=\"\/gruppo1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/04\/image.png\" alt=\"Layout of the MoEDAL experiment\" width=\"482\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Layout of the MoEDAL experiment<\/p>\n<p>In the nuclear track detectors, electrically and\/or magnetically charged particles produce permanent damage in the structure of the materials. After a chemical etching this damage\u00a0 appears as conical hole under an optical microscope, <span lang=\"en\">whose dimensions are related to the properties of the particle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\" style=\"font-family: Open Sans; font-size: 16px;\">In MTD <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span lang=\"en\"><span style=\"font-family: Open Sans;\">aluminum bars act as a trap for magnetic charge. <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en\">T<span style=\"font-family: Open Sans;\">he unmistakable signal of a trapped monopole is sought by scanning the detectors with<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Open Sans;\">a magnetometer of very high sensitivity<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Open Sans;\">and<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Open Sans;\">stability<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Bologna team has full responsability of the nuclear track detector, that is its calibration, construction, chemical etching and analysis.\u00a0 <span lang=\"en\" style=\"font-family: Open Sans;\">As no signal was found compatible with what was expected for a magnetic monopole, new lower limits were placed on the mass of these particles.
