Architecture of Hera-B / Obelix
LAN segment
Hera-B / Obelix LAN segment is mainly a switched 10 Mbps ethernet
network. A switched 10 Mbps ethernet segment gives, every device,
full 10 Mbps bandwidth, while in a non-switched ethernet
segment (either 10Base-2 or 10Base-T) the 10 Mbps bandwidth is shared
by all the non-switched devices in the segment. In Hera-B / Obelix
LAN segment:
- 11 device (5 workstations, 3 X-terminals and 3 PCs), the older (and
slower) devices and the standalone PCs, are non-switched at 10 Mbps;
- 21 devices (8 workstations, 11 X-terminals and 2 print servers) are
switched at 10 Mbps;
- 1 device (HP K250 3-way Symmetric Multiprocessor Server) is switched
at 100 Mbps.
The switching hub (3Com SuperStack II Switch 1000) has 26 port:
- 24 10Base-T port, one of which connected to current backbone;
- 1 100Base-TX port dedicated to server link;
- 1 optional backbone port, for future use, that support either 100
Mbps (optical-fiber or twisted-pair cable) fast ethernet or 155
Mbps optical fiber ATM.
The main features of this architecture are:
- 100 Mbps HP K200 server bandwith is divided by 11 (10 Mbps) X-terminals,
so X-terminals may work on server at full speed;
- VMS alpha cluster is completely switched. Access to a remote disk only
involve the two lines connecting the switch to the machine owning the disk
and to the machine running the program; no traffic is routed in all other
lines;
- future backbone may be connect to the switch by mean of:
- 100Base-TX ethernet (100 Mbps, twisted-pair cable)
- 100Base-FX ethernet (100 Mbps, optical fiber)
- ATM OC-3c (155 Mbps, optical fiber)
