Computing System's
Scalability and Upgradability
HERA-B Bologna Computing System is widely scalable and
upgradable.
- As the computing demand increases, other CPUs (now in number of
3) may be added to the
K250 server (up to 6, all working in
SMP):
- the load balancing mechanism distributes system load among all the
CPUs, and
- the High level Optimizer (HLO) may allows a
program to use all the CPUs in parallel.
- The 960 Mbytes/s (peak)
processor bus, together with
- single-level, full processor speed 1 MByte
instruction cache and 1 MByte data cache, allows data to flow from CPUs and
memory and viceversa
without bottleneck.
- RAM (now 384 MByte) may be added up to
8 GByte,
- and Hard Disk Drives (now 20 GByte) up to
35.5 TByte on Fast & Wide
SCSI bus
(with 128 MByte/s aggregate I/O throughput).
- If the computing demand further increases, the System may be
upgraded from PA-RISC 8000 64 bit CPUs
(10.8 SPECint95, 18.8 SPECfp95 per CPU)
to PA-RISC 8200
(14.4 SPECint95, 22.0 SPECfp95 per CPU)
and then to
PA-RISC 8500.
- As the workplase demand increase, X-terminals (now in number of
14) may be added to the
System.
