Proposed activities

+ Aggiornamenti

Description: The activity is part of the INFN project called “AggiornaMenti”, A science teaching laboratory for teachers of the Secondary School of First Degree. The project AggiornaMenti promotes a teaching of science through experiments achievable with material of very common availability and low cost, so as to be easily reproduced in the classroom.  The proposed activity for PCTO provides, by a group of some students, the creation of short video clips, lasting a maximum of a few minutes, during which some of these experiments are explained and carried out by themselves. A reflection and discussion will be on the experiment and the physical principle will be made together with the experts. A video expert will follow the students with regard to the technical, directing and editing aspects. The videos will then be included in the teacher course website, and also in a dedicated YouTube channel.
Special requirements: No.
What will he learn: Video and directing techniques, knowledge of some fundamental physical processes, sometimes even complex, which describe and explain phenomena of common observation, ability to expose concepts in a synthetic and effective way, having fun.
Number of hours: 40
Maximum number of students: 812
Proposal for dates:  6-10 Giugno (h: 9->16)

+ Almost like being at CERN

Description: During the activity, the data collected at the international laboratories of CERN in Geneva from the experiment LHCb, one of the four major experiments operating at CERN’s LHC accelerator, will be analyzed. The LHCb experiment is mainly concerned with investigating the asymmetry between matter and antimatter currently present in the universe, which originated moments after the Big Bang.
Students will follow a cycle of introductory lessons in which the mission of the institution (INFN) and the purpose of the LHCb experiment will be introduced. A brief introduction to particle physics and statistics will also be proposed. Then we will proceed to the analysis of the data collected by the LHCb detector to repeat, step by step, the work that physicists do daily in the process of publishing scientific articles. The activity will take place exclusively online.
Requirements: Basic mathematical knowledge, PC with Internet connection.
What will he learn: After an introduction to the current state of research in the field of high energy physics, the student will learn to manage complex problems in the context of analyzing the data of a large scientific experiment. During the process, the student will learn the rudiments of a programming language (Python) widely used in science and industry.
Number of hours: 40
Number of students simultaneously: ~12
Proposal for dates: 6-10 Giugno (h: 9->16)

+ Administer the Division

Description:  The activity is part of ordinary administrative activity or the care of the many administrative and accounting aspects to support the scientific activity carried out within the INFN by employees and associate staff. The activity, in general, includes the procurement phases of goods and services, management of electronic invoices from suppliers and VAT under the split payment regime of the PAs, issuance of payment mandates and invoices of inventory goods. In addition, management with liquidation and payment of missions carried out by personnel for scientific purposes in Italy and abroad and management of external funds from the EU and national origin, in compliance with reporting rules. The activity proposed by the PCTO provides, by a student, the support by an administrative collaborator in order to make the various management phases understood with the aim of acquiring autonomy even in one aspect.
