Eugenio Scapparone started his research activity in 1989 with the MACRO experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), being involved in the study of high energy muons and of atmospheric neutrino oscillations. In 1997 he was appointed Run Coordinator of the experiment. In the late 1990s he contributed to the development of a scintillating fiber calorimeter for the CNGS beam. He moved to Bologna in 2002 to participate in the construction of the ALICE TOF, coordinating its first level trigger.
In 2008, as CERN Scientific Associate, he was appointed ALICE Deputy Commissioning Coordinator and became member of its Technical Board.
At the start of the data taking, he became member of the ALICE Physics Board, convener of the forward physics working group (2012 – 2014) and of the minimum bias physics (2016 – 2017).
In the period 2009 – 2016 he was coordinator of the INFN group III (Nuclear Physics) at the Bologna division.
In 2016 he joined the DarkSide collaboration: leader of the Bologna group, coordinator of the photoelectronic system (2017 – 2018) and Project Leader of the DS-20k detector (2018 – 2019).
In 2018 he was elected member of the European Physical Society (EPS) Council over the period 2019 – 2023; in 2021 he was appointed as a EPS Nuclear Physics Board (NPB) member and nominated NPB observer in the NuPECC.
Since 2018 he has been serving as a member of the EPJ-Plus Editorial Board; in 2021 he was appointed as a member of the Nuclear Physics News Editorial Board.
