The questions that drive TASP-BO’s scientific research focus on fundamental particles and interactions and their impact on the Universe: What gives neutrinos their mass, and why do they oscillate between different flavors? What is dark matter made of? Why does the Universe contain more matter than antimatter? Where do the masses of fundamental particles come from, and what is the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking? How did the cosmos evolve into what we observe today?
To tackle these questions, we build theoretical models that explore physics beyond the Standard Model and the history of the Universe. Our group’s approach is rooted in the need to test these ideas against data. Therefore, we connect our models to a broad range of experimental searches — spanning particle physics, astroparticle physics, cosmological observations, and astrophysics — from neutrino and dark matter detectors to particle accelerators and telescopes. We also propose and explore new ways to test these models, including searching for gravitational waves produced by phase transitions in the early Universe, developing techniques to detect dark matter through its imprint in large neutrino detectors, hunting for unusual signatures of richly structured dark sectors, such as semi-visible decays, performing global fits of neutrino oscillation data, both in standard and non-standard scenarios. Alongside this, we develop and maintain open scientific software, freely available to the entire research community, also with the support of AI.
