During hibernation, mammals show an enhanced resistance to radiation that may have important applications in radiotherapy and space travels.
In recent years a procedure to mimic a torpor state in non-hibernators has been successfully developed, paving the road to possible human applications.
The multidisciplinary HIBRAD/HYPORAD projects are conceived to investigate the molecular mechanisms at the basis of the enhanced radioresistance experienced by animals during hibernation, focusing on the early response of tissues to radiation, through the analysis of tissue damage and gene expression.
These pioneering experiments represent the initial steps towards a possible way to improve the human response to ionizing radiation.
