Modern ROOT Workshop: First Training Event Held in Bologna

Between 16 and 18 September 2026, the INFN Section of Bologna and the Department of Physics and Astronomy (DIFA) hosted the first training event in the “Modern ROOT Workshop” series.

The three-day workshop brought together around 40 participants, including undergraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and particle physicists. The training was delivered by experts from the core development team of ROOT, an analysis framework widely used in particle physics.

During the course, the latest developments and new features offered by ROOT were presented, with a focus on high-performance data analysis, which is essential for the success of the physics programmes of the collaborations that will take part in data taking at the High-Luminosity LHC at CERN, as well as for many next-generation particle physics experiments.

The event consisted of interactive presentations, during which participants received guidance and feedback from the ROOT developers. In the final session, participants also presented the solutions they had adopted in some of their own projects and discussed them with the experts.

The organisers would like to thank the local representatives of the INFN Section of Bologna, the DIFA Research Committee, and the trainers from the ROOT team — Danilo Piparo, Vincenzo Padulano, and Jonas Rembser — for their valuable contributions to the organisation and success of the event.
