CUORE

“Analysis of the vibration modes of cryogenic detectors in correlation with an associated seismometric system for the determination of the transfer function of vibrational noise of seismic and / or anthropic origin to the bolometric crystals of the CUORE experiment”.

Keywords: master’s degree, experimental thesis, data analysis, background noise reduction, seismometers
Duration of the thesis: about six months.

The thesis will involve, compatibly with the Covid-19 health situation, short periods of activity at the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratories and will take place in collaboration with american colleagues.

CUPID

“Optimization of neutron transmuted doped ( NTD ) temperature transducers for the new generation of experiments with selenium molybdate bolometric detectors, CUPID experiment.”

Keywords: master’s degree, experimental thesis, research and development and detectors construction, solid state, silicon and germanium, detectors.
Duration of the thesis: about six months.
The thesis will involve, compatibly with the Covid-19 health situation, short periods of activity at the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratories and will take place in collaboration with American colleagues
The activity will also take place in collaboration with the Bologna Unit of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems (IMM).

AMS

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a high energy physics experiment in space. It measures cosmic rays (CRs), which are high energy particles and nuclei coming from outer space.
AMS has been installed aboard the International Space Station in 2011, and has collected more than 160 billion CRs, as of October 2020.
The main purposes of the experiment are:

  1. the understanding of the matter/anti-matter asymmetry in the universe through the direct search of complex anti-matter in space;
  2. indirect search of dark matter in CRs;
  3. the understanding of the origin, acceleration, and propagation of CRs;
  4.  study of the heliosphere and of the Earth magnetosphere   (space weather, solar modulation of cosmic rays, …).

AMS Bologna group is deeply involved in the AMS data analysis.
In parallel, the group is also helping the development of CRs models that describe the propagation of CRs in the galaxy (GALPROP) and in the heliosphere (HelMod).

We will propose to students the use of official AMS data. The research topic will be agreed upon among the research lines stated above. In the case of master thesis or Ph.D. students, training periods at the AMS control center located in CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, or at the ASI (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana) in Rome will be planned.

ANTARES/KM3NeT

Neutrino telescope group offers several opportunities for bachelor, master and PhD theses on different research subjects:

  • analysis of ANTARES e KM3NeT data to search for neutrino sources and in coincidence with gravitational waves,  Gamma Ray Burst and other events according to a multimessenger approach.
  • use of neural networks and Machine Learning strategies to discriminate among different patterns in event reconstructions for ANTARES and KM3NeT telescopes.
  • implementation of the KM3NeT data acquisition system.

These activities are carried on in strict coordination with European and extra-European scientific institutions and universities.

DARKSIDE

The DarkSide Bologna group offers the opportunity to carry out three-year and master’s theses related to the development, construction and test of the signal transmission system from the photodetectors (SiPM) to the read-out electronics, as well as to the assembly and characterisation of the photodetectors that will be used. in the experiment. The activities include cryogenic and clean room tests in Bologna and participation to tests at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories and/or at CERN.

EUCLID

The topics here listed can be developed at different levels, as Master thesis or PhD thesis.

  • Analysis of Euclid NISP Spectroscopic data: from raw data to the study of cosmological parameters
  • Constraints on neutrino properties with Euclid
