Development of detectors based on plastic scintillators read with Silicon photomultipliers

For the reading of organic scintillators, Silicon PhotoMultipliers are used, latest generation single photon sensors which replace the traditional phototubes. Thanks to the use of these sensors, compact and high-performance detectors can be created. In this case, the detector must be able to detect particles at the minimum of ionization and at the same time guarantee a high temporal resolution (about 200 psec). The thesis activity involves laboratory measurements on prototypes of scintillators and on SiPMs. Depending on the period, there will also be the opportunity to participate in beam test campaigns at CERN or at the INFN National Laboratories of Frascati.

Monte Carlo FLUKA is used to simulate the response of plastic scintillators read with Silicon PhotoMultipliers. The entire signal production process is simulated: from the energy loss of the particle crossing the scintillator, the production of light, its propagation  inside the scintillator, the sensor response and the preamplifier response. The comparison with  prototypes  allows the Monte Carlo tuning, providing the information for the construction and optimization of new prototypes.
